1. What is this about?
This is a trial to support validation of a novel bTB test for use in bulk milk samples. We want to find out how effective the test is across bTB free, suspended or withdrawn herds across GB.
2. What samples are being used?
We will use 3-4 bulk milk samples between Feb-23 and Sep-23 (approx. quarterly). Samples will be tested by NMR at NML Glasgow.
3. What happens with the results?
Even though this is currently a non-validated test, because bTB is a notifiable disease and subject to statutory conditions, NMR are legally obliged to inform Scottish Government, Welsh Government and Defra of farms with a suspect positive result in Scotland, Wales, and England respectively. However, we have explicit agreement across all CVOs that no action will be taken from these results (CVO letter attached). Reporting these results is simply a fulfilment of the legal requirement to inform government of any suspicion of disease – even with a non-validated test.
4. Who else knows the results?
Test results will also be shared with SRUC, who will match the farm’s test result with their bTB status. SRUC are the only organisation that will have access to both datasets, and there is a data sharing agreement in place to ensure only anonymised aggregated results are reported.
5. How will the findings be reported?
Individual farm results will not be available to producers. Anonymised aggregated results will be presented at the end of the trial and after analysis is complete (likely to be Jan-24).
6. Will the test be available after the trial?
We expect the results of this trial will enable worldwide approval of this test in bulk milk, to support bTB control. We don’t know, but we hope the test can be used across GB in 2024.
